Extreme Dreams: Solomon Islands

Welcome to the Solomon Islands, where jungle-covered islands rise from turquoise water and life moves to the rhythm of the ocean.

After flying in from Brisbane, we arrive in Munda - a tiny frontier town surrounded by reefs, jungle and scattered islands lost deep in the South Pacific. This is where our expedition begins.

We settle into the waterfront Agnes Gateway Hotel before gathering for our first evening together: expedition briefings, kayak prep, dry bag packing and cold beers overlooking the lagoon as the sun disappears into the Pacific.

Tomorrow, we leave roads, schedules and normal life behind - and paddle into the wild.

Today, we leave the comforts of modern life behind and paddle into the wild heart of the Solomon Islands.

Our first day on the water takes us through warm turquoise lagoons fringed by coral reefs, tiny jungle islands and impossibly clear Pacific water. As Munda disappears behind us, expedition life kicks in - salt drying on your skin, the rhythm of paddle strokes, and nothing ahead but open ocean and remote island camps.

By afternoon, we land on Mandau Island and set up our first wild beach camp beneath the palms. While the light fades across the lagoon, dinner is prepared over the fire - fresh local seafood, island flavours and cold drinks shared barefoot in the sand.

Tonight, the soundtrack is waves on the shore, jungle sounds in the darkness and a sky packed with stars.

Distance: 15-20 km

Today, we venture deeper into the wild blue maze of the Solomon Islands - paddling through hidden reef passages, tiny jungle islands and crystal-clear water that barely feels real. This is where the expedition really starts to get good.

Reef sharks cruise beneath the kayaks. Coral gardens explode with colour below the surface. Every bend in the lagoon reveals another deserted island, another stretch of empty beach, another reason you came.

By late afternoon, we arrive at the remote village of Pinadapada, where we’re welcomed with island smiles, fresh local food and a glimpse into a way of life shaped entirely by the ocean.

Tonight, we fall asleep beneath the palms with salty skin, tired shoulders and waves rolling onto shore.

Distance: 15-20 km

This morning, we slow things down and spend time in the village - learning how life works out here in one of the most remote corners of the Pacific.

We’ll experience a glimpse of daily island life, from fishing and food preparation to stories, laughter and the simple rhythms of a community shaped entirely by the ocean.

After lunch, we load the kayaks once again and paddle towards Nusa Aghana Island, where crystal-clear water and vibrant reef systems wait just offshore. Camp is set up right on the beach, with the afternoon reserved for snorkelling, swimming and soaking up another ridiculous Solomon Islands sunset.

Distance: 10-15km

Today is our biggest paddle of the expedition - a long, rewarding push deeper into the remote island chain.

We travel across open stretches of turquoise water, weaving between reefs, tiny jungle islets and remote sand cays scattered far out in the Pacific. It’s a day that will test tired shoulders and reward every paddle stroke.

And then comes Njari.

Pristine water. Empty beaches. Some of the best snorkelling of the entire expedition.

After setting camp on the shoreline, there’s time to slip beneath the surface and explore vibrant coral reefs alive with colour, fish and crystal-clear visibility stretching out into the blue.

Distance: 30km

After yesterday’s big push, today is all about slowing down and soaking up the magic of Njari Island.

Spend the day exploring one of the most pristine marine environments in the Solomon Islands - snorkelling untouched coral gardens, drifting through crystal-clear water and discovering hidden reef systems straight off the beach.

For those still chasing adventure, there’s the option for short exploratory paddles around the surrounding islands and lagoons.

This is the kind of place you never really want to leave.

This morning, we paddle into the island waters surrounding Gizo, weaving through impossibly clear lagoons, reef-fringed passages and tiny jungle islands scattered across the Pacific.

Along the way, we stop at tiny Kennedy Island where a young John F. Kennedy once swam ashore after his patrol boat was sunk during World War II.

By afternoon, we arrive at Imagination Island Eco Resort - our own private island oasis after days of expedition life in the wild.

Cold drinks appear. Fresh seafood hits the table. Turquoise water laps gently at the shore while the sun disappears slowly across the lagoon.

It’s the kind of place that makes you want to miss your flight home.

After days of paddling remote islands, sleeping on wild beaches and living expedition life deep in the Pacific, we slow things down today and dive deeper into the underwater world of the Solomon Islands.

The reefs surrounding Imagination Island are extraordinary - giant coral systems, absurdly clear water and marine life drifting right beneath our feet.

Joining us for the final stage of the expedition is freedive instructor and mindset coach Cindy Yang, founder of Ocean Glide. Today, Cindy introduces us to the foundations of freediving and breathwork - teaching us how to slow our breathing, relax beneath the surface and move more efficiently through the water.

This is not about records or pushing limits. It’s about learning how to feel calm, capable and fully present beneath the surface.

By the end of today, you’ll never look at the ocean the same way again.

Today, we put it all into practice.

With new skills, growing confidence and some of the clearest water in the Pacific at our doorstep, we spend the day exploring the incredible reefs surrounding Imagination Island.

Glide silently over coral gardens, freedive through warm tropical water and come face to face with the vibrant marine life that makes the Solomon Islands one of the world’s great underwater playgrounds.

No schedules. No rush. Just saltwater, sunshine and a full day immersed in one of the wildest marine environments on Earth.

Tonight, we celebrate the adventure properly  one final feast beside the water with salty skin, tired shoulders and a group full of stories that will be hard to explain back home.

This morning, we transfer by boat to Gizo before boarding our flights back towards Brisbane.

Tired shoulders. Salty gear. A camera roll full of ridiculous water colours and reef shots.

And somewhere along the way, the Solomon Islands has probably worked its magic on all of us.
